What to Pack for Your First OTR Trip
A real list of what you actually need when you first go over the road โ not the YouTube version.
What to Pack for Your First OTR Trip
Every YouTube video about this topic shows a driver with a perfectly organized sleeper, custom curtains, and $2,000 of gear. That's not where you start.
Here's what actually matters for your first time out.
The Essentials You Cannot Skip
Bedding: The factory bunk mattress is firm and thin. A basic memory foam topper (2โ3 inches) and your own pillow make a real difference. You'll sleep in this bed most nights for months.
Clothes for 2+ weeks: Pack more than you think you need. Laundry at truck stops costs time and money. Having 2 weeks of clothes means you can do laundry on home time.
Food and a cooler: A 12V electric cooler changes your finances. Even a $30 soft-sided cooler for your first trip is better than eating every meal at a truck stop.
Personal hygiene basics: Truck stop showers cost $12โ$18. Bring your own towels, flip flops, and soap. Keep a small toiletry bag in your bunk so you're never hunting for your toothbrush.
Electronics
- A 12V or USB power inverter so you can charge everything
- Noise-canceling earbuds or headphones (for sleeping near noisy trucks at rest areas)
- A phone mount for GPS โ use your phone's maps or Truckers Path in addition to your company ELD GPS
- A dash cam (optional but worth it โ protects you in disputes)
What to Leave Home Your First Trip
Don't bring everything at once. You don't know yet what you'll actually use. Your first trip is a scouting mission. See what you reach for, what you wish you had, and what you never touch.
The sleeper that works for you will take a few weeks to figure out. That's normal.
