How I Got Into Trucking (And What I Wish I Knew Before Signing Anything)
I got into trucking through a company-sponsored CDL program, but didn’t fully understand what I was signing. Here’s what happened, what it cost me, and what you should know before making the same move.
How I Got Into Trucking
Getting into trucking wasn’t some long-term dream for me. It was a decision I made looking for a better opportunity.
I started out by going through a company-sponsored CDL program. On paper, it sounded like a solid deal. They cover your schooling, get you trained, and put you to work. In return, you commit to working for them for a set period. In my case, it was a 10-month contract.
I went through the full process:
- 4 weeks in CDL school
- Passed and got my license
- Went out with a trainer for about 2 weeks
- Got assigned my own truck
From the outside, everything looked like it was moving fast in the right direction.
Where Things Went Wrong
I didn’t fully understand what I signed up for.
I either didn’t read the fine print closely enough or didn’t grasp how it would actually play out once I was working. Once I got on the road solo, I realized I was making less money than I was before I even got into trucking.
That wasn’t what I expected.
At that point, I had a decision to make. Stay and finish the contract, or leave and deal with the consequences.
I chose to leave early.
I don’t recommend doing that lightly. If I had stayed, the company would have paid off the cost of my CDL school. Walking away meant I took that cost on myself. But for my situation at the time, it was the move I felt I had to make.
What Happened Next
After that, I moved to another OTR company and stayed there until I had about a year of experience.
Once I hit that mark, I transitioned into a regional position, which is where I’m at now.
What You Should Take From This
If you’re thinking about getting into trucking, especially through a sponsored program, understand exactly what you’re signing.
Not just the big idea. The details:
- Pay structure
- Contract terms
- What happens if you leave early
- What your actual weekly income might look like
Trucking can be a solid career, but your starting point matters more than you think. The wrong setup can set you back instead of moving you forward.
