Quick verdict

The Garmin dēzl OTR720 is the current 7-inch model in Garmin’s truck-navigator line (announced August 13, 2024). If you want a dedicated screen that routes by your truck’s size and weight, shows trucker-rated parking, and doesn’t depend on your phone’s screen, it is the mainstream pick. Owners mostly like the big display and truck routing. The recurring complaints are local and final-mile routing, and the fact that several “live” features need your phone and the dēzl app. It is a good fit for a new over-the-road driver in a company truck. It is not a substitute for reading signs and checking the route.

What owners report

Ratings we could read on public pages: Best Buy showed 4.5 out of 5 from 112 reviews, and an Amazon page excerpt showed 4.2 from 235 ratings (both read via search-result excerpts on 2026-10-02; Best Buy’s own page would not load for us, so treat the figures as approximate).

Positives owners mention: The large, clear screen, truck-aware routing, and the parking and loading-dock community data. A trade comparison site calls the OTR720 the center of Garmin’s current range and the sensible default if you don’t need a built-in camera (TruckGPSReviews).

Complaints owners mention: On r/Truckers, drivers report that Garmin units can take long routes or struggle at the last stretch to a stop. One driver with the older OTR710 said it “isn’t really built for local” work (r/Truckers thread). Other recent r/Truckers threads about the 720 mention random shutdowns, often blamed on the power cord, and routing that doesn’t match local restrictions (thread 1, thread 2). Reddit blocked our direct access, so we only saw search-result summaries of those two threads — read them yourself before relying on that.

Cons

  • Price. About $450 is a lot next to a free phone app.
  • Phone dependence. Traffic, weather, fuel prices, parking community data, wind alerts and PrePass notifications need a Bluetooth-paired phone with the dēzl app, and PrePass needs an active account.
  • Short battery. Retail listings say two to under three hours.
  • Not a guarantee. Garmin’s own footnote says entering your truck profile does not guarantee every restriction is accounted for, and to defer to posted signs.
  • Local routing. Owner reports point to weaker results on final-mile and local delivery stretches.
  • Naming trap. The older OTR710 (2022) is still discussed in reviews and forums. Make sure the listing says OTR720 (model 010-02924-00).

Who should skip it

Skip it if you run mostly local or final-mile delivery and plan to rely on it for the last few blocks; if your company’s ELD tablet already gives you truck routing you trust; or if you don’t want to pair a phone to get the live features.

Alternatives

  • Garmin dēzl OTR620 (6-inch) and OTR820 / OTR1020 (larger) are on the same platform; Garmin’s 2024 series range was $349.99 to $899.99 at launch.
  • Garmin dēzlCam OTR725 adds a built-in dash cam.
  • Rand McNally truck GPS units, covered in the comparison above. Check the exact model’s map-support status first.

How we researched this

We pulled Garmin’s product page, owner’s manual and press release; Staples and a distributor spec sheet; a price tracker; and public rating figures from Best Buy and Amazon via search excerpts. We read trade comparisons and searched r/Truckers and TruckersReport. We did not log into Amazon, scrape it, or handle the product. We did not copy any product photos. Figures marked “approximate” come from excerpts rather than the full page. All checks were done on 2026-10-02.
