Quick verdict

A multi-tool is not a tool kit, but it is the thing most drivers want in a pocket for cutting zip ties, tightening a loose screw or opening a box. The Leatherman Wingman is a 14-tool model with spring-action pliers, scissors and a locking knife, priced around $50 at Leatherman. One TruckersReport driver says he has a Wingman and uses it daily for small jobs on the road. Other drivers in older threads are blunt that no multi-tool replaces real tools. Treat it as a pocket supplement.

What drivers report

TruckersReport, “What tools and gadgets should I carry OTR?” (Mar 21, 2022) (thread):

  • One driver said that as a good supplemental tool he would highly recommend a Leatherman multi-tool, that he has the Wingman, and that he uses it daily for miscellaneous tasks on the road.
  • Others in the thread listed work gloves, a flashlight, vise grips, and WD-40, duct tape and zip ties.

TruckersReport, “Multi-tools” (Nov 2014) (thread):

  • One driver said he keeps an old Leatherman Supertool.
  • Another said a Leatherman is no substitute for an actual tool set.
  • Another said he is paid to drive, not to turn wrenches.
  • Another said he knew of no multi-tool that is any good, only a good set of tools.

We found no independent ratings we trust for this model beyond Leatherman’s own page, which showed 4.67 from 883 reviews on 2026-10-03 (self-run, not independent).

Cons

  • A multi-tool is a compromise. Small pliers and short handles are weak for real wrenching, and drivers say so.
  • Your carrier’s rules apply. Many carriers limit what repairs a driver may do; a multi-tool does not change that.
  • Blade rules. Check laws and facility rules before carrying a locking knife into shippers, receivers or other places that restrict blades.
  • Older photo. The photo on this page is a 2019 picture of the Wingman. Check Leatherman’s page for the current finish.

Who should skip it

Skip it if you already carry a full tool set and a fixed knife, if you cannot carry a knife where you load and unload, or if you want a saw or a larger blade.

Alternatives

  • Leatherman Sidekick: 14 tools, listed at $69.95 on Leatherman.com on 2026-10-03, with a saw and a serrated knife but no scissors. We did not research it further.
  • A basic tool set and vise grips: what the 2014 and 2022 threads say you actually need for roadside jobs.
