A durable career is one you can still do. That sounds low-bar until you watch people blow out their back, their marriage, or their license chasing a year that looked good on paper.
Protect the license and the body
No side project, lease deal, or gadget matters if you cannot pass a physical or you take a preventable out-of-service. Sleep, hours, and maintenance are the career. Treat FMCSA hours and vehicle rules as the floor, not a suggestion.
Money that survives a bad week
Settlements are lumpy. Build a buffer before you finance a truck, a course, or a “system.” If a plan only works when freight is perfect, it is not a plan.
Extra income and ownership
Some drivers want a small extra income. Some want their own authority. Both can be legitimate. Both are also where the loudest marketing lives.
Ask:
- Does this cost sleep I need to drive safe?
- Is the contract something I can exit?
- Am I buying a job, a truck, or a story?
This site used to lean on gear lists and side-hustle pages. Those are not the product anymore. If a tool, book, or product earns a mention later, it will be because it is useful — not because it fills a category.
