Getting better is not the same as running harder. Plenty of drivers are exhausted and still underpaid because they cannot see the math.
Read the run, not the headline
A load that “pays $2,400” means nothing until you know miles, empty miles, fuel, and time. Use:
Write the numbers down for a few weeks. Patterns show up faster than arguments with dispatch.
Change companies on purpose
Jumping every time you are mad resets your reputation and your nerves. Before you switch:
- Know your real weekly average, not your best week.
- Know what you are trading (home time, miles, detention, equipment).
- Do not burn a reference over one bad load unless the pattern is clear.
Skills that still matter
Backing, trip planning, and a clean inspection record are still the job. Apps do not replace a pre-trip. A fuel card does not replace knowing your MPG.
There is no certified “good money” number that fits every region and every seat. Anyone who says otherwise is selling something. Verify safety and hours questions with FMCSA. Verify license questions with your state DMV.
